ProvenanceLord Stalbridge, London; sale, London, Christie, Manson & Woods, May 3, 1929, lot 44, illus, sold for £3,800 to; E. Permain; William Randolph Hearst, San Francisco, New York, and San Simeon, S.B. lot 164; sold November 30, 1942 for $6,000 to [1] Gimbel Brothers, Inc., New York, “sales ticket no. 525; Max B. Berman, New York; consigned December 5, 1944 to [2] French & Co., New York, stock no. 77274/9; sold December 7, 1949 [3] to Samuel H. Kress Collection, New York [4]; given to NCMA 1961.

[1] Although Shapley says that the painting was offered for sale by Hammer Galleries, New York, 1941, no. 164-I of the catalogue, it does not appear in the catalogue of the Hammer Galleries sale, 25 March 1941, consulted at the GRI. The Hearst inventory card S.B. lot 164 [microfiche 88] notes that Nash’s Magazine [probably one of Hearst’s magazines] purchased the painting “5/31/29.” Because the card also says “Lot #44” under “Their reference no.,” the date probably should read 5/3/29, the date of the Stalbridge sale. Under “Amount” is listed “20,387.16” and under “Remarks” is written “£4189.10.” The card also indicates that the painting was located at San Simeon, having been shipped to San Francisco 1/17/1930 by American Express. The painting was transferred December 1, 1937 to American Newspapers, Inc., another Hearst property.

[2] Berman consigned a number of works to French & Co. in 1944, including other works that had come from the Hearst collection.

[3] The painting was on loan from French & Co. to the Los Angeles Museum [forerunner to LACMA] from 1 October 1946 until 1948. The Los Angeles Museum Loan card 2147 indicates that the painting was for sale for $9,500. The card is annotated “2-25-53 Dr. Valentiner says Item 1 [Moroni] returned (returned to owner) in 1948.” French & Co. records at GRI.
