[1] On the verso is a “Galerie Kahnweiler” label that includes the inventory number “290.” Van Dongen sold several works to dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler in 1907 and was the subject of Kahnweiler’s first exhibition at his seminal 28 rue Vignon gallery in Paris in March 1908.
[2] According to an exhibition label on the verso of the painting, the painting possibly belonged to French actor Alain Delon for a period of time. The label states the work was included in Alain Delon : 20 ans de Passion, at Didier Fine Art, Paris, 1990—an exhibition of Delon’s collection. French actor Alain Delon is a noted collector of modern art, including many works by the Fauves. The title on the exhibition label refers to the work as Femme nue couchée, indicating the picture may also be known as this.
